Just wondering how hard do you think it would be to make a P-Code compilier.

Been thinking about this a lot, lately so maybe we could make are own vb7 instead of vb.net.

Free Version of VB.
Own version of VB so you don't have to use .Net
Maybe make our own runtime that is better than the current one.
Learning experience.
Coolness factor.

Items 4 and 5 are themeselves usually sufficient justification ...

I'm curious about 1, 2 and 3 though ...

1. VB6 Pro`is, and will continue to be available at giveaway prices (mine cost 56 roubles, which cost me about $US2.50 at the time....

2. Who <i>has</i> to use .NET? (hmmm.. who in their right mind would actually wish to?

Unless of course their job depended on it, in which case they have my sympathy!

3. Ya don't need a new compiler for that, really. many things in there already many are unaware of .... tucked awy in drawers, behind curtains, in case the kiddies trip over them and have an accident...

All this is just my humble tuppence worth, of course ..

It is Visual Basic with better OOP....same language...new words....

But through which lens do you think they view IT?

I'd suggest market domination was the primary concern, not technological progress ....

Not that they invented it .... this is the same (economic) system that made the Von Neumann architecture dominant, pushing more superior (but less powerful commercially) architectures aside, and giving us the virus and hacker-infested ocean we all have to swim in today ....

As was done by IBM with the mainframe, so they managed with PC's, once they accepted that a market was opening - "Oh my God, we won't OWN that market - quick, an OS, our kingdom for an OS) - so they were instrumental in helping turn Bill into some sort of latter-day prophet of the new millenium ..... spare us!

BTW, I was not criticising your age, my friend, in fact I am envious of it, as is the nature of the twilight years... the data is all there in libraries for any who care to study .... very few people even of my advanced years have any idea any of this has happened ... they assume there is only one basic model of a computer ..... not so... never was ....

Interestingly, what I love about VB6, as a Systems Programmer, (itself a source of suspicion to some) is that, for me, it reminds me of MCP and PICK more than Unix, so that's always going to make it an object of affection for me .... dynamic arrays, variants, dynamic thunking, these are all ideas from MCP and PICK, not from IBM or Unix.... or DOS

The other day i saw an ancient ad for a Tandy 5000 for "only $8995" it had a whopping 2MB of ram, and a 20Mhz processor.

Have you guys seen the Pirates of Silicon Valley?

Tells how HP, Xeroxm,....all the big guys lost out on what microsoft(and apple) has created....

Antitrust was good but it was mainly the darkside of Microsoft....PoSV is more of a fun documentary on the lives of bill gates, paul allen,steve jobs, etc brought the PC market up to where it is today.

I wish they would port vb to mac...Come on they have VBA in Mac Office.
VB even contains two hidden mac commands. MacScript and MacID

"MacID" - is that the UUID that gives you a unique system id? from the motherboard rather than the HDD serial no?
